Title: My collecting room - Planning, building & displaying
Post by: Nicklab on June 18, 2009, 08:53:49 AM
Now that I'm in a new home (complete with a basement), I'm trying to figure out just what to do with my collection.  I want to get a good deal of it on display, but also have some options for storage.  So if you've undertaken a project like this yourself, I'm really interested in finding out what solutions worked for your collections.

This is going to be the first in a series of posts.  I'll be updating this thread on a regular basis as I take measurements, photos and show some of the progress.

I have my own SW room downstairs in my finished basement.  Ikea shelves are on one end for GG stuff.  Then I have shelves with scenes, dioramas I designed around the room for each movie.  A very long project still ongoing which came to a screaching halt when I had kids!  I think you have seen a few photos.

Anyway, that was my plan and if I ever finish, it should look pretty cool!

UPDATE!  I'm making a major effort to clear out my storage unit and get the collection room project underway.

The first step?  I'll be getting some folding tables that I'll use for larger Hasbro displays.  I'm trying to tailor the size of those tables to the size of my wall space.  The tables I'm looking at are like this:

I'll be putting some kind of cloth throws over the tables, and using the area underneath for storage.  That storage area will be elevated off the floor by cinder blocks with plywood by about 6 - 8".

The area above the tables will be set up with bracket shelving.  I'm not sure how many shelves I'll be going with, but I'm looking at shelves that are at least 12" deep.

I'd post some pics now, but the room itself is just a sea of boxes.  More to come soon.

What are you going to put on the tables? Diorama?

Yeah, the tables will be for large dioramas.  I'm going to try to set up displays by categories/movies.  It'll go in order through the movies.

Episode I - Battle of Naboo - Gungans VS Trade Federation
Episode II - Battle of Geonosis or Geonosis arena
Episode III - Battle of Kashyyyk
Episode IV - Death Star hangar
Episode V - Battle of Hoth
Episode VI - Battle of Endor

Well, a big part of the process has begun:  I've cleared my entire collection out of storage and it's now in my house.  As for the room coming together?  That may take a little while.

Congrats Nick! Can't wait to see what it looks like...

We've been shopping for home and in the plans are for an office of my own to finally be able to display everything that's been in/out of storage for the last 10 years...

Bumping this up.  I had to take a bit of a hiatus on this project for a number of personal reasons.  But I've been slowly building towards getting ready for the final phases.  So over the next few weeks (and possibly months) I'm going to be posting some progress reports in this thread.  Stay tuned!

Nice, can't wait to see how it turns out!

It was a great feeling when I cleaned out my storage unit (of course, now my garage is full of boxes of toys...)

So, picking this back up after a while...

I've got a basement space that I've been prepping gradually through the fall and winter.  The space is about 13' x 18'.  And the first challenge was this:  HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE A COLLECTION?  And one that has been accumulated over close to 20 years?

For me that answer was to organize them by each movie.  I've opened a lot of my figures over the years, so I got down to organizing (mostly) by movie, but also by common scenes and themes.  Hence these containers:

The basic ideas on the themes?
-MOVIE:  ANH / SCENE OR THEME:  Rebel Pilots
So, I got all of my Rebel Pilots from the Battle of Yavin (Luke, Biggs, Wedge, Red Leader, Porkins, Gold Leader, etc) and their droids packed into one of these containers.

Bit by bit I worked through similar ideas:
-MOVIE:  TPM / SCENE OR THEME:  Galactic Senate
***INCLUDES Valorum, Senator Palpatine, Queen Amidala (Senate Gown), Yarua, Orn Free Taa, Lot Dodd, Mas Amedda, Senate Guards, etc
-MOVIE:  AOTC / SCENE OR THEME:  Dex's Diner
****INCLUDES:  Obi-Wan Kenobi, Dexter Jettster, WA-7 droid, R4-A22, scene filler aliens (extra figures)
Etc, etc, etc

As I get more and more figures categorized, the containers can go on the shelves that are designated for each movie.  And I also have a couple of bookshelves that will eventually get all of my Star Wars books, comics and some high end pieces.

I'll continue to post some updates.  Because this is going to take a while.
