Title: DVD/Blu-Ray/On Demand: What are you watching...
Post by: Matthew on July 10, 2009, 03:57:38 PM
I just saw a film from the 50's titled Scaramouche.  Its a wonderful swashbuckling adventure in its own right, but if you watch it think Empire Strikes Back while you do  ;)

I've recently seen:

Knowing - It had an okay mystery that kept you entertained but didn't deliver at the end.  Also, a best supporting actor nod to Nic Cage's toupee.

REC - This is the Spanish movie that spawned "Quarrantine".  Only 1:15, but tense.  I'd recommend it.

Watched Knowing last night.  It was pretty good until toward the end.  It could have been so much better if the ending is different

I bought Thunderpants on DVD.  It's a British movie starring Rupert Grint of Harry Potter fame.  He plays best friend to some kid whose uncanny flatuence allows him to become an astronaut somehow.  It was underappreciated in its time, I think.

Just got Blackadder Vol 1-5. Just recently watched a bunch of bad movies, Ice Breakers (horror/monster) a low budget movie where everybody dies off screen, The Boogeyman another horror/monster film with some violence, but no blood, guts or gore. I also bought Zapped, a movie starring Scott Baio that came out when I was a teen. I always wanted to the see the film and so when I saw it for 5$ I couldn't resist. I wish I had.

For some reason I keep watching I keep watching low-budget horror movies too.  I'll break down the one's I've seen recently into two categories...Terrible and Unwatchable.

Terrible:
My Bloody Valentine (1981)
Zombie Strippers - Jenna Jameson's hopefully final fortay into mainstream movies.
Grizzly - Jaws rip off.
Phenomena - Sound track was like nails on black board, but did have a prepubecent Jennifer Connelley.
Frontiers - Hostel knock off.

Unwatchable:
Suburban Sasquatch - Looks like it was filmed with a cell phone camera.
One-Eyed Monster - Unfortunately I know it won't be Ron Jeremy's final fortay into mainstream movies.
Basket Case - Ridiculous.
Grizzly Park - Worse than Grizzly.
Lets Scare Jessica to Death - One of the worst movies I've ever seen.

I was disappointed with Knowing.  It started reasonably well, but it kept on dragging itself further and further away from the right atmosphere.

Basket Case is an acceptable movie.  The more you learn about how it was made, it's a very impressive movie for being made on a shoestring.

Recently saw......

The Fury with Kirk Douglas.  Good movie with explosive ending (that they make sure you see from every possible camera angle).

Green Street Hooligans - Not usually my genre but an engaging movie nevertheless.

Watched Coraline on Blu-Ray last night.

The video presentation was absolutely perfect and as pristine as it gets.
The story was pretty good too and draws you in the more you watch.
You can def see the Nightmare Before Xmas influence here.

My son begged me to take him to see this in the movies, I did and he cried towards the end, had to leave.  Not a movie for a 5 year old, just so you guys with kids know.  LOL.

Saw a couple flicks over the weekend......

Silent Running - A cult sci-fi film from the 70's.  Not too bad.

12 Rounds - A don't stop to take a breath action film starring classically trained thespian John Cena.  Silly but good fun.

My Bloody Valentine - Was only able to see it in 2D.  Better than the original.  Also featured what has to be the longest nude scene in cinema history.  This chick must have been bucka$$ naked for the entire day of shooting across 3 sets.  God Bless her.

I picked up the animated Green Lanter - First Flight the other night.  I had seen the first few minutes online and decided that it was probably gonna be pretty cool.  I've only made it a little ways into it so far and I like what they've done with the story.

Has anyone else picked this up?

I never read it either but I could totally see it being better then the movie.  Lots of novels that turn into movies are like that.  There better as books then a movie.

I finally saw Rashomon by Kurosawa.  Worth a look if you haven't already seen it.

Also, The Burning a 80's slasher flick with George Costanza and the guy from Short Circuit.  Not very good, but better than Jason X.

Speaking of 80's horror flicks I need help with one.  Now please take all these facts as half-truths b/c I'm really remembering far back.

I'm guessing mid 80's.
Campy horror movie where a family has to barricade themselves in their suburban house.
They are hiding from zombies or vampires or some humaniod creatures.
I want to say the house was a split level.
Lots of pastel colors for the house and wardrobe.
Want to say it was a dad, mom, couple kids and maybe a neighbor.
Everytime they think they have the house sealed off, the creatures start breaking in somewhere else.

I just rented Night of the Comet b/c I thought that might have been it.  It wasn't.  So a female is probably one of the lead roles (maybe a cheerleader).

I think one of the family members is injured and they have to care for them as they are doing everything else.

I know not very much detail to go on, but worth a shot.

I looked this up.  If its the Triangle from 2009 its supposedly a remake of the Spanish film "Time Crimes"

Checking the imdb page for Time Crimes, it doesn't sound like the same story at all.  They both deal with looping time, but nothing like the same situation.
While it could be perceived as a spoiler, Triangle could best be described as three small loops inside of a larger loop.  And somehow, time doesn't enter into the loop all that much.

But I'll still look to see Time Crimes if I can.

Just saw....

Dead Snow - if you like zombie movies you should like this one.

Inglurious Basterds - was a bit too long, but was good.  Brad Pitt was good and I didn't have a problem with how little the Basterds were in it.

Saw Jennifer's Booty...

It was okay, nothing great.  It got better towards the end.  Felt like they were less concerned with story than coming up with snappy dialogue.  Reminded a bit of The Heathers.

Also saw Zombieland...

Been meaning to see it for a while.  I thought it was very good.  Less creative zombie kills than I expected, but still some good laughs.

I bought a copy of Pirate Radio.  A very fun movie.  But I've been surprised to see that the initial sale prices on standard DVD's don't seem to be where they used to be.  I think Blu Ray may be eclipsing standard DVD's in terms of the movie studio's marketing focus.

Cabin Fever 2

I liked the first one, so I decided to give this a try.  It also came with some luke warm recommendations.

It had some parts that made you cringe out of grossness, but it was like 3 seperate disjointed movies.  I'd say PASS unless you're hard-up for some campy gore.

Spartan

This movie had an all-star "B-cast"; Val Kilmer, Kristen Bell, William H Macy and "Al Bundy".  It's a pretty good low-bedget suspense thriller.  The other thing that bothered me was that each suspect gave them just enough information to lead them to the next suspect.  This happens like 5 times.

Saw a few flicks this weekend:

Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) - It was good.  They recreated some of the famous scenes and added to the backstory.  Kept the dreams more realistic also.

Splice - It was okay.  The female doctor plays the prototypical "Eve" role.  She wants to taste the forbidden fruit regardless of the consequences.  You'll want to punch her in the face the whole movie.

The Girl Who Played with Fire - Not as good as the first film and furthers the notion that all men are rapists and indiscriminate rapists at that.

Too bad, I like Sara Polly.
I just saw the comic book movie Superman/Batman Apocalypse. It was very good. The animation was pretty faithful to Michael Turner's artwork, which was both good and bad at times. Almost all the voices were excellent, the exception being Andre Braugher as Darkseid. The actresses that did the voices for Wonder Woman and Big Barda were fantastic.

Yeah, I thought this was probably the best of the straight-to-DVD animated flicks.  Darkseid's voice was terrible.  Batman played an intriguing role.

Wal-Mart had several of the DC animated movies on sale, so I picked up Green Lantern: First Flight, Super Man/Batman: Public Enemies, Batman: Under the Red Hood. All were well done. Green Lantern was decent, but didn't think that Christopher Meloni was right for thr part as Hal, but Victor Garber was good as Sinestro. I liked Under the Red Hood best. Bruce Greenwood did a decent job as Batman and Jensen Ackles was great, like him on Supernatural and the Red Hood character had the same kind of attitude.

So after seeing clips of it online for years, and having seen the original, I decided to watch Nicolas Cage's "The Wicker Man".

The 2nd half of the film Mr. Cage turns in the one of the greatest acting performances in history (rivalling Adrienne Barbeau in "Creep Show")

He slugs three woman, including the lovely Leelee Sobieski and the famous bear punch.

And on top of that delivers such classics as:
"How did get burned? How did get burned!"
"Oh god no!"

plus the DVD version features:
"No, not the bees. Not the bees!"

In the commentary the director mentions how Mr. Cage brought more to the role than was written on the paper.  Let me say he brought more the role than could be written on any paper.

Decent, short sci-fi flick.  Some of the twists are predictable and you don't want to think too hard about the plot.

Also, after tiring of Netflix to carry it I watched Piranha Part II - The Spawning online.  So I can confirm it is STILL the best movie about killer flying fish ever made.

King's Speech - quality drama.  Not as much cursing as I had heard.  Geoffery Rush brought it.

Hall Pass - Made me laugh pretty good.

Horrible Bosses - Had a few moments.

Bridesmaids - A few really funny parts.

Hobo With a Shotgun - Title says it all.  Decent exploitation movie.

Watched the first season of WKRP, loved the show as a kid, still enjoyed it as an adult. Also watched a movie that I saw as a kid and was scared, but as an adult was completely disappointed. It's a 1970's "horror" called "Bug". About mutant cockroaches that come out of the ground after an earthquake and terrorize a small town.

Watched another 70's made for tv "horror" film that I remembered bits and pieces of as a kid titled "The Bermuda Depths". What a huge disappointment. I was hoping it would at least be a fun/silly movie like the original "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark", but I was wrong. The movie has little to no plot and the characters have no direction or goals.  Though Connie Selleca was hot as hell then.

We rented "Tower Heist" last night on on demand. Yes, not a DVD. But on demand & Netflix seem like the only rental options these days.

Anyway, even though I had been annoyed with Ben Stiller because of the movie he's shooting near my job in NYC, I think he was okay in this. It wasn't a side-slapping comedy, but it had some funny moments. And it also seemed rooted in reality with clear parallels to financial fraud like that of Bernie Madoff. And it was definitely good to see Eddie Murphy doing a comedy for adults again, and not silly Klumps or Dr Doolittle movies.

I went into this REALLY wanting to like it, I have the first one on DVD in my collection of Marvel movies - but this one was just REALLY bad, the whole time I just kept thinking to myself "what a low-budget effort" - there was nothing redeeming about this outing at all.

Hopefully this will be the last Ghost Rider movie and whoever owns the rights will let them revert back to Disney for a reboot...

I just picked up Avengers earlier today.  I've got to admit, I'm amazed at just how many different versions of the movie are out there:  DVD/Blu Ray combo, 3D/DVD/BluRay combo, collectors editions, a basic dvd version...

Anyhow, I watched the movie again today.  And it was the first time I saw it since I watched it in the theater.  It definitely hold up to repeat viewings.  And I'm probably going to bite the bullet and get a Blu Ray player soon, and I'll finally be able to watch the bonus features.

In the leadup to going to see The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey, I've been revisiting the directors cuts of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.  It's been great to get back into the world of Middle Earth.  And it's been especially cool to pay special attention to some of the things that didn't make it into the theatrical releases.

When I was watching Fellowship of the Ring it was great to watch the council meeting in Rivendell.  Perhaps it's because I'm getting ready to see the company of Dwarves in The Hobbit.  But that also made the scenes in Moria that much more interesting, too.  After all, Moria is the domain of Balin, who is one of the company of Dwarves.  As is Gimli's father, Gloin.

And another thing came to mind that was in the directors cut of Return of the King.  When Aragorn picks up the palanthir in Minas Tirith before marching on the Black Gates, I hadn't realized until now that you ACTUALLY SEE SAURON, and not just the firey eye.

Now?  When do I find time to get to the theater to see The Hobbit?

It was definitely on the dry side, but the story is very compelling.  Especially since this REALLY HAPPENED.  The US economy was on the edge of a cliff in the Fall of 2008, and getting a sense of both what was behind the crisis and how a potentially bigger catastrophe was averted has been the reason that I've watched this made for TV movie multiple times when it's been on HBO.

Quality flick.  Better than Quantum of Solace, but I may have liked Casino Royale better.  I've never been a Bond fan, until these new ones came out.  Lots of homages in this one.

Did you notice the grave sites that had the "Bond" name on them?  I found this confusing as I thought that was a name given to the 007's? I didn't realize all the James bonds were supposed to be the same character.

Cloud Atlas.  Had high hopes this was going to be good, it was over 3 hours long, 3 hours of my life that I cannot get back.  Awful movie.  Didn't even really make sense to me, didn't see the point of it.  Was mostly about being connected by love and reincarnation I think but was just terrible.  good idea, bad movie.  The makeup on the characters was awful for the most part as well.  Trying to make the main characters look Asian in some scenes as it related to the story made them look like they were not real instead.

I'm in the midst of trying to re-watch Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven.  This movie really does have a great cast.  And it's interesting to see some of the actors who appeared in some other Ridley Scott projects.  It's not at the pinnacle of Scott's work as a director, but then that is some pretty heady territory.

If anything, I think the movie left people questioning the ability of Orlando Bloom to take on the leading man role.  And seeing how the most recent Pirates of the Carribean movie focused on Johnny Depp's character, and not Blooms?  I suspect that his star has fallen somewhat.

Just watched the movie "Free Enterprise." I thought it was pretty good, but then I'm a Trekkie. It's focus is on 2 friends (both Trekkies, but obviously enjoy other Sc-Fi as well), their relationship with each other and with women. Definitely worth watching at least once. William Shatner playing a slightly less egotistical version of himself.

I watched the last of the Nic Cage Trilogy, Deadfall (Wicker Man, Vampire's Kiss).

It is a neo noir with a star studded B cast.  Cage is only in the middle portion of the movie but he does go out with a bang.  Other than him the movie was pretty boring.

I don't know how the other actors keep a straight face when he's doing his thing.

Spring Breakers

Bad, bad movie.  James Franco turns in a good performance as a gangsta pimp and the rest of the movie is naked womens of all shapes, sizes and colors; yet its still unwatchable.

It might have had about 25 minutes of unique footage, the rest was just relentless flashbacks and flashforwards.

I tuned in for about 10 minutes of Sharknado.  OMG, it was so bad that I could scarcely believe it!  From the premise, to the bad acting, to the abyssmal cgi, it was a s#!tfest from the word go.  And that seemed to be the appeal of it.  It was so bad that it came back around to be good....because it was so bad!

As for "Spring Breakers"?  I got the feeling that the producers were trying to sell that movie as a vehicle for the audience to see Selena Gomez in a bikini.

My take is this:

#1 is a classic
#2 is ridiculous
#3 is passable thanks to Ricardo Montalbon
#4 is good, especially the ending
#5 is a celluloid abortion

What, no love for the animated Planet of the Apes series?

As for the modern takes on Planet of the Apes?  I appreciate what Tim Burton was going for.  But I had a tough time getting into that film.  Marky Mark just comes across as Marky Mark more often than not.  As for the most recent one?  It was an interesting departure which at least TRIED to explain where this big evolutionary leap happened with the apes.  And I think Andy Serkis did an amazing job with the mo-cap performance for Caesar.  From what I understand there's a sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes in the works, too.

I thought Rise of the Planet of the Apes was excellent.  Good job giving background, some tie-ins with the original and Caesar was great.

Yes, I think Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is done filming.  Some stills are out.  I'm looking forward to it even though it would appear to mimic the events of #5 (Battle for the Planet of the Apes).

Tried to watch it, but shut it off after the second or third episode. The problem is that after the first film, all the other movies contradict it and the all the movies after it contradict the one before. Continuity wise it made no sense, same applies to the cartoon series. The TV show however was pretty good. It remided me a lot of both the Fugitive and the Incredible Hulk. Characters on the run from the law go from town to town helping people, giving false names and just being missed by the law man whos looking for him/them.

X-Files is my favorite all-time show.  First few seasons are great and then the seasons before and after the movie (5th and 6th, I think) get epic.

The Korean film "The Host"?  I thought that was kinda a let down.  But 90% of ballyhooed foreign movies are.  The one exception I can think of is the Spanish film produced by Del Toro called "The Orphanage".

Yeah, it's not quite what I thought it would be. The monster looks good, but I didn't expect it to have humor. I thought it was going to be more serious like Cloverfield. Wasn't able to watch it all, the DVD was bad and froze an hour in.

Not a DVD purchase/rental, but an On Demand view...

I finally got around to watching Pacific Rim after I caught a radio interview with Guillermo del Toro.  The movie really doesn't have a whole lot of depth to it.  But then it's inspiration is the Japanese monster movies of the 1960's.  There's definitely an aspect of anime that's been worked into the story, given the mecha aspect of the Jaegers.

The Kaiju looked pretty impressive.  Although the lighting and their scale makes it tough to discern a lot of details.  And the Jaegers?  They were pretty kick-ass!  I have to admit, I loved it when the Gipsy Danger crew used that ship as a weapon during the Hong Kong battle sequence.  Although the fall from 50,000 feet?  It was a little tough to suspend my disbelief that Gipsy Danger could survive that fall.

I don't know if the movie merits a sequel.  But it was definitely good fun!

I enjoyed this movie despite the terrible writing and acting.  I was always a big fan of the old Godzilla movies (the very campy ones from the 60's) and Pacific Rim was very similar in its campiness.  I want to pick up the 18" Gypsy Danger robot figure that NECA is releasing, but I'm sure my wife would kill me.

Since then i've watched Arrow season 1 (great show), Leverage season 3 (enjoyed every season so far), Warehouse 13 season 4 (disappointing, slightly better then season 3) and rewatched Coupling season 1 (funniest britcom ever). I really wanted to see American Hustle in the theater.  David O. Russell's movies have proven to be pretty interesting.  And to make one about Abscam of all things, set in the late 70's/early 80's?  It seems odd but cool all at the same time.  Plus Christian Bale's character just looks bizarre!  I might have to check it out On Demand soon.

Watched the last two seasons of Leverage. Loved the show and fourth season didn't disappoint. The underlying story that ran through the season almost seemed like it was the end of the show. They had a villian that has ties to their past and they brought back several characters that had apperaed previously. I was kind of shocked, I knew their was still another season, but this really felt like they could have ended the show with season four. Unfortunately they didn't and season five was terrible. It was like they didn't put much effort into it. Final episode was pretty good though and the last scene did bring a smile to my face.
Thanks to the East Brunswick Library sale I walked away with a few DVDs I had been missing. I was able to get Coupling season 2,3 and 4 and Being Human (BBC) season 2 for a good price. Can't wait to watch them.

Well after getting Being Human season 2 from the library sale I was able to get seasons 3 and 4 on sale at Best Buy. While I loved the first season, the rest of the seasons just didn't thrill me. Watched all four seasons of Coupling. First two seasons were great and had some of the funniest episodes. Season 3 was mediocre and season 4 was terrible. With season 3 they started to get a little serious and in season 4 they got rid of my favorite character.
Warehouse 13 recently came to and end and I was able to pick up season 5. I liked it a lot better than the past two seasons.

Watched both seasons of The Munsters and the 2 movies. The first season was great. It was exactly as they intended it to be, a sort of parody of all those classic family tv shows such as "Father Knows Best" and "Leave It to Beaver." Even the opening credits reflected this with Lilly standing at the door greeting everyone as they went on their way.      The second season they went a different direction and made it more slapstick with the focus on Herman and Grandpa.
Now of the 2 movies the first one "Munster Go Home" was actually better than the second one "Munsters Revenge", by a wide margin, but still not as good as it should have been.

Just finished watching both seasons of Dark Angel. The first season was pretty good. It's a basically a different take on the superhero genre. She's a genetically altered human trained to be a solider. By day she's a bicycle messenger, but by night she's the Dark Angel. I remember watching the show when it was on the air, but there was a lot I didn't remember like Jensen Ackles being a cast member in season two.
I liked season one better than season two because of the whole superhero thing (think female Batman), but they decided to change too much at the end of season one and all of season two.

Watched DCs "The Flashpoint Paradox." It was okay, not a bad story, but not one we haven't seen a million time before. This has got to be the most violent DC cartoon I've ever seen. People being beheaded, one person is shot in the head and you actually look through the hole to see who shot him. The thing I disliked the most was the animation. For the most part it wasn't bad, but every so often when they did a close up on Batman or Aquaman, they had these huge jowls, like bulldogs.

I've been catching it on cable recently, but never from beginning to end.  It's an interesting premise.  And the twist does mess with your head in a big way.  But then I think it's supposed to.

Its a solid possession movie.  You can entertain yourself during the movie by trying to figure out who has the worse Brooklyn accent, Eric Bana or the lovely Olivia Munn.

Finished all 5 seasons of Quantum Leap. What a great show, so disappointed when they cancelled it. The 5th season was a little weak compared to the previous 4, but still good. After that I watched the fist season of Penny Dreadful. I wanted to like this show, but the whole "Erotica" aspect just annoyed me. I couldn't figure out if this was a bad porn with a good story or a good story ruined by bad porn. If they just eliminated that it'd be great. I also watched for the fist time the movie Stargate. I know it's been around for a long time, but I only recently found a cheap copy. I've watched the show and knew I'd like the movie, and I did.

Recently watched 3 DC movies, JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time, Justice League: War and Son of Batman. JLA Adventures: Trapped in time was bad and worth the watch. In a brief Synopsis, Lex Luthor gets launched forward in time to the 31st Century. He's able to find out the secret Identity of Superman and is able to go back to any period in time. The problem is that he goes back to a short time after he left and then tries to use the Legion of Doom to capture baby Kal-El. Didn't make any sense to me, should have gone back to the time of the crash and gotten rid of the Kents himself.
The second movie Justice League: War was (like Flashpoint) another violent film. It's the formation of the Justice League as they battle Darkseid. Despite it being new 52 it was really good, but I don't think it was necessary for the characters to curse.
Son of Batman is also new 52, but it too was good. I think Alfred had some of the better lines.

Dead Snow 2

Picks up right where the 1st one left off.  I felt like they went more for comedy in the sequel, but it was highly entertaining.

Women and children were not spared.

Really?  I didn't see it in the theater, but it played like crazy on cable.  I think this movie surprised a lot of people.  Liam Neeson was awesome in it, too.  Now they're about to put out Taken 3.  I wasn't crazy about the second one.  Hopefully the third installment learns from some of the mistakes of the second.

Yeah, don't have cable so... I don't think I'll bother with 2 or 3, it's like Die Hard, the first one was good, but all he others never lived up to the greatness of the first.

Watched all 4 seasons of Heroes in anticipation of the new show. First season was excellent, interesting story, leaves you wanting more. Season 2 is where it all went down hill. Because of the writers strike that cut the season short. It wasn't terrible, but could have been better. Season 3 seems like they decided right in the middle to go off in another direction. Add to the fact this involved trying to redeem Sylar just didn't do it for me. Season 4 is mostly forgettable except for the very end. Turning Sylar into a Savior of the specials just annoyed me.

It's about these CDC agents who get called to an Arctic Outpost where 3 people have been exposed to an unknown virus. it has some similarities to John Carpenetr's the Thing and too a multitude of zombie movies. Fantastic 4 was just so bad.  I thought the original was much better even if they were a bit corny.  The new actors sucked I thought.

I saw this dvd collection at wal-Mart and couldn't resist it was called "The Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection, Vol. 1." It had 5 different "monster" movies form the 1950's. It had the following movies Tarantula, the Mole Peolple, The Monolith Monsters the Incredible Shrinking man and Monster on Campus. I lked them all except Monolith Monsters. Basically it was about these space rocks that could petrify people, but mostly seem to grow really big, fall down, break into a million pieces and do it all over again. Tarantula and the Incredible Shrinking man were the best. Monster on Campus was fun and Mole People was okay, but reminded me a bit of the Time Machine.

I've been binge-watching The West Wing on Netflix recently.  And OMG, is it tough to get through a single season of a one hour network television drama!  Each episode is at least 44 minutes, and a whole season is at least 22 episodes!!!  I started a few weeks ago and I'm only halfway through season 5, and there were a total of 7 seasons.  When I get done with this I'm going to start with this show's evil twin:  House of Cards.

I've also been watching Roadies on Showtime.  It's about a road crew for a fictional band, and Cameron Crowe is the showrunner.  Honestly, I think it's pretty cool.  But there's one odd thing about the show:  they've created some significant backstory for the band, but I haven't heard them play a single note.  When Cameron Crowe directed Almost Famous, I think he had Ann or Nancy Wilson write some music for the fictional band.  Why not any music for the fictional Staton-House Band?

So I think this movie I was trying to find might be Return of the Living Dead II.  The year it would have been on cable is just about right, circa 1989.

When I was watching it didn't instantly click, but it ticks off so many of the boxes it must have been what I was remember through a 20 year fog.

Super

A weird but interesting movie.  Good supporting roles by Kevin Bacon and Ellen Paige.  Since its a James Gunn production also had the familiar faces that appear in all his movies.

Matinee

By Joe Dante starring John Goodman about a schlocky movie producer in the 60s.  Not a great movie but it had some whimsy.

The Cloverfield Paradox.- I've been anxiously waiting a true sequal to Cloverfield....And I'm still waiting. This was a 2 hour long mediocre episode of the Outer Limits with almost no ties whatsoever to the first film except at the very end.

Oh wow, this is out already.  I'll still probably check it out.

Turbo Kid

Retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic, campy gore-fest.  If the preceding sentence intrigued you....check it out.

I thought is was passable.  I wanted to see what would happen next.  So I'm guessing the pod at the very end is the same pod at the very end of the first film??

IT

Thought this was solid.  Took some departures from the TV movie.  More graphic.

Brawl in Cell Block 99

Takes a while to get going but has a big payoff.  Very violent.

Den of Thieves

Red Sparrow

These movies were similar.  Both had a very heavy plot with lots of characters and a montage ending that explained to the viewer what was really going on during the whole film.

Sugar

The first half of the movie is a lot about baseball, after that it's more about the character.  It does a good job of making you feel isolated.

It was solid, if unspectacular.

Bite

Canadian metamorphosis horror movie.  The most unrealistic "New York City" setting I've ever seen, but other than that it was pretty good.

Annihilation

Interesting concept but the execution was lacking.  Slow moving with some pretty odd music choices in the beginning.  Doesn't answer any questions with it's open ending.

Lego Batman

Much like the original Lego Movie, really frenetic in the beginning but slows down to a watchable pace.  I chuckled a few times, the Batman theme song near the start was probably the best part.

Pretty average overall.  A few things didn't make sense (swat team at newspaper).  Now put me in the minority b/c I thought the Venom from Spider-Man 3 was solid.  It has two credits scenes.

I'd have to say not as good as the last couple.  It gives you all the impossible mission stuff you're expecting though.
