The Star Wars Saga is Coming in 3D!
Source: Lucasfilm Ltd. September 29, 2010

Lucasfilm Ltd. announced today that the live-action "Star Wars" saga will be converted to 3D.

"There are few movies that lend themselves more perfectly to 3D; from the Death Star trench run to the Tatooine Podrace, the 'Star Wars Saga' has always delivered an entertainment experience that is completely immersive," said the statement.

Presented by Twentieth Century Fox and Lucasfilm Ltd., the "cutting edge conversion" will be supervised by Industrial Light & Magic.

Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace is expected to be released theatrically in 2012. A release date has not yet been determined.

"Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right," said John Knoll, Visual Effects Supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic. "It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results. For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience."

Wish they would skip right to the original trilogy though.

With this whole 3-D craze going on, I have yet to go see a single 3-D release in the theater.  Haven't gone to see Avatar or anything else.  The physical disorientation alone is a bit much to deal with.

Same here. Haven't even look at the Anna Kournikova issue of Maxim that's in 3-d. Star Wars will be a must for me though - even the prequels, although I just wish they'd skip those!

I saw Avatar in 3D Imax and it was one of the best movie experiences I ever had.  If SW comes close to that it will be awesome.

I saw Avatar in 3d and a few of the kids movies with my kids and it was like night and day.  The 3d Avatar was unreal.  No annoying focus problems etc.  But the kids movies were not as clear.  It was a totally different experience.

I haven't seen Avatar - I guess I should have in the theater. But when I saw the 3-d Terminator theme ride @ Universal Studios back in 2003 or 2004, I thought it was awesome - so I think I'm going to love the 3-d stuff.

My question is this:  how do you physically feel after the movie, having removed the 3-D glasses?

I'm thinking the Prequels might look better than the OT in 3-D.  I'm trying to think of good OT sequences.......Trench Run, Asteroid Field, Superstructure.

PT has got the Pod Race, Clone War, Open shot of ROTS, Mustafar.

I felt perfectly fine.  With Avatar they didn't go over the top with the 3D, it kind of felt like you were imersed in the film.  It was a great experience and didn't feel like some of the Universal themed rides or anything like that.

You get better experience if the movie is shot in 3D and not upconverted.  I hope they will do it right for SW.  Also, this is not your old 3D. Can't believe you guys missed out on Avatar.  That sets the bar for all other 3D movies.  I hate gimmicky 3D movies.

I've seen Avatar in 3D, which was needless to say the best display, but I also caught the Toy Story double feature in 3D last year, and I know you can't compare animated to live action, but the re-do was really well done for those 2.

Bottom line, I'm psyched that the saga will be back in theaters, mainly so I can take my kids to see it in theater, by the time the get around to OT (2015  ::)) my son will be the perfect age to enjoy it....

yeah and avatar sucked without the 3d by the way. I watched it on my HD blue ray and thought it was lame.  The 3d effect really made the movie in theatres.

I was totally thinking the same thing. My son will be 2 soon but by 2015 he'll be prime time age to watch the OT. I can't wait! It will be awesome to see the wonder in their faces like when we first saw them in the theaters.

I thought I read that they were releasing all in the same year, but I may not have understood it correctly.

Yeah, it really isn't clear in the announcement, I'd guess that if the prequels don't do well enough they may release them closer together.

Lucasfilm announced today that Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith will be released theatrically in 3D back-to-back on September 20, 2013 and October 11, 2013, respectively.

"Attack of the Clones" will be going up against Ron Howard's Rush with Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl, while Paul Greengrass's Captain Phillips starring Tom Hanks is scheduled on the same date as "Revenge of the Sith."

"Attack of the Clones" will also be battling for 3D screens against The Little Mermaid 3D, opening a week earlier, and "Revenge of the Sith" will be in a similar situation with Sin City: A Dame to Kill For presumably opening in 3D theaters a week before.

Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace was released in 3D on February 10. Re-released by Fox, the 3D version earned $43.5 million domestically and $59.3 million internationally for a worldwide total of $102.7 million.

I sure hope the 3D for EP 2 is better than the first because it was a let down for me.

The problem with converting an old movie into 3D is you won't see much 3D at all.  I don't think they will do for the OTC.  Look at EP1, they admitted it was a challenge to convert it because it's old.  EP2 and 3 will be much better because they have better reference sources.

I went to the 3D panel at CVI, John Knoll and Dennis Muren were the speakers, Knoll supervised TPM's transfer, while Muren is busy with AOTC as we speak, mentioning it takes about a year to complete, with that the AOTC footage shown was way better than what I remember TPM looking like, though it could have the theater quality

I think it's a good idea to compress the schedule, TPM in 3D probably didn't do as well as they liked so no point in dragging their feet in releasing the other 2 prequels and moving on to the OT.

John
Did they say they will do OT?

I can't site the source, but I'm near certain that I read that it was all 6 films for 3-D conversion. But that could have been something I read on an on-line post - I can't remember.

It's interesting that they've decided to stack both AOTC and ROTS.  But I think that there's a sense that AOTC might be one of the weaker draws of the saga, and pairing it with the strong ROTS in a coordinated release might benefit both 3D releases.

As for the different time of year?  February is positively DEAD at the movies.  I still have to wonder why they released TPM in 3D this past February.  Obviously they wanted to avoid the competition of the summer movie season, but this just seemed to be a bad choice.

I guess it now makes sense they moved up ROTS to this year, they've known about an Episode 7 in 2015 since at least last summer, which should mean that we'll see the OT in 3D next year.

Still surreal to me that all of this is happening.

Episodes II & III 3D postponed...

From the OFFICIAL SITE (http://starwars.com/news/focusing-on-star-wars-episode-vii-lucasfilm-postpones-episodes-ii-and-iii-3d.html):

Focusing on Star Wars: Episode VII, Lucasfilm Postpones Episodes II and III 3D
January 28, 2013

Lucasfilm has decided to postpone this fall's scheduled release of Star Wars Episodes II and III in 3D. Given the recent development that we are moving forward with a new Star Wars trilogy, we will now focus 100 percent of our efforts on Star Wars: Episode VII in order to ensure the best possible experience for our fans. We will post further information about our 3D release plans at a later date.

I'm surprised by this, I really thought they would finish out the prequels and give us the OT in 3D next year in the ramp up to Episode VII.

But I guess if they are shooting for a 2015 release, they don't want to spread their resources too thin.

It's noteworthy, but seeing how Episode I in 3D was something of a non-event (I know I skipped it), I'm not terribly surprised.  It would have been nice to have all of the movies in the theater during the leadup to Episode VII.  But that's another story...
