I'm catching up on some older stuff on Netflix.  I just finished watching "Long Way 'Round". It features Ewan McGregor and his buddy Charlie Boorman as they rode their motorcycles from London all the way across Europe and into Asia.  There they rode through Kazakhstan, Mongolia and far eastern Russia.  When they reached the city of Magadan in Russia on the Sea of Okhatsk they flew their bikes and crew across the Pacific Ocean to Alaska.  And from there they rode to Canada and eventually on to New York City to complete a journey of some 20,000 miles.

Even though the show was released in 2004 it's a really interesting watch.  I even got my wife into watching it, too.  We finished up with that show last night, and now we're watching the follow up series which is called "Long Way Down".  In this show Ewan and Charlie start up in Scotland and drive south through Europe and then onto Africa.  In Africa they begin in Tunisia and ride east along the Mediterranean coast until they get to the Nile river.  At that point they follow the Nile south to it's headwaters.  And then they continue further south, ending the journey in Cape Town, South Africa.

I've added a few shows to the mix...

GOLD RUSH - DISCOVERY CHANNEL - It's largely a lot of the same guys that have been at it since the first season.  But there is something fascinating about the process of mining for gold.  If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

THE CURSE OF OAK ISLAND - HISTORY CHANNEL - This series documents the search by two brothers and other treasure hunters who are trying to solve the mystery of possible buried treasure on Oak Island, an island off the coast of Nova Scotia in Canada.  People have been searching the island since the early 19th century based on a number of clues.  Some people think there's buried pirate treasure from the 17th century.  Others seem to think that the treasure might have lost artifacts that were hidden by the Knights Templar.  It sounds like something right out of National Treasure.  And this site has drawn searches and excavations that have even drawn the likes of John Wayne and Franklin Roosevelt (decades before he became President of the United States).

I'm watching SHIELD, REBELS and the FOX Sunday cartoons.  I think Rebels is done until January.

Also, on the final season of Breaking Bad, as far as old shows.

The only new show that I'm watching this year is Flash, other than that I'm following several shows from previous years. I don't have cable, so I watch the show (broadcast) or buy the DVD if it's a cable show.
The flash has been a fun show so far, different from the previous DC Heroes shows like Smallville or Arrow. Tried watching Scorpion, but the dialogue and acting was so over the top. Tried Gotham, but it just didn't catch my interest. Still watching Agents of SHIELD (which did pick up this season), Sleepy Hollow (love the whole revisionist history aspect), Arrow (the better Batman show). In addition there is the 100, Big Bang Theory and The Goldbergs. Unfortunately due to the fact that they changed days, I can no longer follow Elementary, Supernatural or Hawaii 5-0.

There are a few things that I'm watching and/or DVRing at this time...

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD on ABC - I've been sticking with the show since the premiere last season.  I was able to watch the first 4 episodes this season, but lately it's been a little difficult to stay current.  The show has definitely picked up following the events of Captain America - The Winter Soldier in the spring.  I wish I could stay current, but then I guess that's what the DVR is good for.

Finding Bigfoot on Animal Planet - This is total junk TV, but it's fun.  I think it's great to see people exploring nature.  The true believers on the show REALLY believe that they're going to find Bigfoot.  More and more, I tend to agree with the skeptical scientist on this show.  It seems that there are reasonable explanations about some of the evidence, and the believer members of the team have some confirmation bias.  But there's other evidence that leaves you wondering.  And from a TV standpoint I have to wonder how this show would actually deal with the possibility of an ACTUAL find/sighting.  Discovery Networks would probably go bananas about that possibility.

STAR WARS REBELS - I've been tuned in since the early previews.  And the show is something I check out on a weekly basis.  It seems to be starting slow.  And I have to wonder how the world of the crew of the Ghost is going to expand.  But then I guess the show needs someplace to go.

As for older shows that I've been checking out?  Well, I have Amazon Prime.  And I checked out Star Trek - Into Darkness a couple of months ago.  And I suspect that's the reason why this particular show turned up in my recommendations:  Star Trek - Enterprise.  I had seen one or two episodes of the show when it was in it's first run about 10 years ago.  Something piqued my interest about this show and I started checking it out.  And over the past month I managed to watch all 4 seasons of the entire series.

Conceptually, I think the premise of the show was awesome:  show Earth's Starfleet in it's infancy as they begin to venture out into deep space.  And it really represented some fertile ground for Star Trek.  Because even in The Original Series the United Federation of Planets is firmly established, as is Starfleet.  In Enterprise there's no Federation yet.  And Starfleet is a much smaller organization.  The NX-01 Enterprise is the first ship of it's kind that's able to travel at speeds that makes journeys between star systems take days as opposed to months or years.

The technology of TOS has it's flaws, but there's a big leap from where manned spaceflight is today to what we were called on to accept in Kirk & Spock's 23rd century.  Enterprise bridges that gap.  The engine is only rated for Warp 5.  The transporter is used primarily for moving cargo and not personnel.  The universal translator isn't something they can depend on, so the ship has a linguistic specialist.  The weapons are in a state of development.  Hell, the Enterprise takes significant damage on a regular basis because shields aren't part of their technology.

And then there's the relationships with other species.  The Vulcans are looked at with skepticism for holding Earth's interplanetary outreach back.  The Klingons are a factor, but only one of many.  The Andorians and the Vulcans are at odds with one another, and surprisingly Earth winds up being a mediating force between them, paving the way for peace.  And the Romulans are a mysterious force.

I genuinely liked the show.  And I wish I had been able to check it out when it first ran.  I've read a bit about the history of the show and got the sense that it was hoped by the producers to run longer.  It also seems from the way the show ended that the showrunners had more stories to tell.  Rumor had it that the 5th season would have potentially featured a war between Earth / the Coalition of Planets and the Romulans.  I think that would have been really cool.  And personally, I found this show more engaging than other Star Trek series like DS9 and Voyager.  But I guess the ratings weren't there for a show that was this expensive to produce.

My wife and I started watching Gotham.  It's pretty enjoyable - a bit hammy at times, but I guess that's part of the fun.

I want to check out Arrow and The Flash, but haven't gotten around to it.  We watched the first episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and weren't impressed, but I might try to get back into it since i heard it's getting good.

I'm trying to finish Star Wars: The Clone Wars (I just started Season 4) on Netflix, and then I'll probably check out Rebels.  Other than that, I try to catch Comedy Bang Bang, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and some news shows.

We pretty much only DVR shows these days, unless we're just switching through channels.

2014/15 TV SEASON - What are you watching/DVRing/streaming?
« Reply #1 on: November 17, 2014, 07:13:49 PM »

We're a couple of months into the traditional 2014/15 TV season.  But it seems that more and more the model of a September through May TV season has been reimagined into smaller seasons.  And people are also watching TV shows in whole new ways.

So what shows are you watching THIS season?  Do you watch your shows live, or do you DVR them to watch at your own convenience?  Or are you watching shows that are only offered via streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime or Hulu?
